NASA has defined ambitious forecast goals for the next 25 years, some of which are shown here. These include improving hurricane landfall forecasts to 75 nautical miles (~140 km) three days in advance by 2030. Accurate forecasts of other severe storms and tornados are also high priorities. It is these rare but sometimes deadly events that drive the quest for improved forecasting.
